The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2019 (18-25 Jan)

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2019 was celebrated between 18-25 January. This year’s theme chosen by the churches in Indonesia was “Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue…...” (Deuteronomy 16: 18-20). The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is a week where Christians all over the world come together to attend special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services to pray for unity.

In Seremban, leaders and members from different churches came together on 25th January and attended a prayer service held in the Wesley Methodist Church. Some 200 people attended the event. Leading the delegation from the Church of The Visitation was Parish Priest Rev Fr. George Harrison and assistant Parish Priest Rev Fr. Xavier Andrew. Also, in attendance was Rev Fr. Eugene Benedict, Parish Priest, Church of St. Theresa, Nilai. Joining the Fathers was 2nd year in Philosophy, seminarian Brother Philip Asirwatham from College General, Penang. Guest speaker at the event was the General Secretary, Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM), Rev Dr. Hermen Shastri.

The service began at 8.00pm with leaders and guest speaker made their way into the church as the congregation sang the entrance hymn. After the introductory words, the Prayer of Repentance was prayed and led by church leaders from Praise Sanctuary, Tamil Methodist Church and Agape respectively. Members from the Church of the Visitation chanted the responsorial psalm before the gospel reading taken from St. Luke 4: 14-21.

Dr. Hermen then gave his homily where he touched on the area of justice, unity and mercy. He also stressed that we should go out beyond our boundaries to share the Good News and do good deeds. After the homily, leaders were invited to come forward with the yellow-coloured card where petitions were written to laid them in the basket placed on the altar as an offering. This followed by the profession of The Nicene Creed by the whole congregation. Pastor Kelvin Ong from Tabernacle of Worship led the prayer of the people. The Lord’s prayer was then prayed before the closing hymn was sung.

Fr. George accompanied by other church leaders gave the final blessings. The prayer service ended with a fellowship arranged by the Wesley Methodist Church.
