Inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s message for the 9th World Day of the Poor, the Ministry of the Poor (MOP) of the Church of the Visitation (COV), Seremban, marked the occasion with a warm and joy-filled celebration dedicated to honouring and uplifting the poor. Earlier in the day, MOP members animated the English Mass, during which special blessings were offered in conjunction with the celebration.

The event welcomed MOP adoptees, members of the Orang Asli community, and others facing economic hardship.  In his opening remarks Rev. Fr. Kenneth Gopal the Assistant Parish Priest emphasized that the World Day of the Poor is not only a time to offer support to those in need, but also a reminder of the universal dignity of every human person.  He highlighted that today is a day to celebrate everyone, regardless of skin colour, race or religion, underscoring the church’s commitment to unity, compassion and inclusiveness.  Elizabeth Chong, leader of the Ministry of the Poor, warmly greeted the attendees and expressed her heartfelt gratitude for their presence everyone later enjoyed a delicious lunch and tea served by MOP members, assisted by COV’s Women’s Ministry.

A variety of meaningful activities were organised throughout the afternoon. A representative from TEKUN delivered an informative talk on business opportunities, guidance, and support services available for aspiring entrepreneurs. Former adoptees also took to the stage to share their personal journeys, from past struggles to present achievements, offering encouragement and hope to all who listened. One previous adoptee showcased her artistic talent by teaching primary and nursery children to create art and craft using recycled materials, while teenagers participated enthusiastically in a motivational session led by other successful former adoptees.

Following the inspiring talks, attendees of all ages joined a series of fun-filled games coordinated by MOP and supported by Visitation youths, filling the atmosphere with laughter as many walked away with prizes.

Before concluding the celebration, families were invited to select and bring home quality pre-loved clothes, shoes, handbags, and bedding sets, all carefully sorted earlier by MOP, SSVP, and the CJM ministries. The St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) Society also distributed party packs to the children, while MOP provided each family with cash vouchers.

The Ministry of the Poor extended their heartfelt appreciation to all volunteers from the various ministries whose generosity, service, and joyful spirit helped bring warmth and cheer to the poor on this special day.
